Tonsils are the immune system's first line of defense against infection. However, these lymph glands can sometimes become infected and if the tonsils are largely swollen and the tonsils are located on each side of the back wall of the throat, just above and behind the tongue. The adenoids are found above and behind the soft palate (roof of the mouth) where the nose and mouth join. Theses tissues help defend the body against infection. When they are overcome by chronic infections, or when marked enlargement blocks breathing, tonsils and/or adenoids may need to be removed. During surgery, the tonsils and adenoids are removed from the wall of the throat. The adenoids are reached by lifting the soft palate
